Scrap Wood Pallets

Cold Cellar

A Scrap Wood Project

The heat wave here in the Northeast has been a bit uncomfortable and due to the extreme humidity, it's really been hard to get outside and work on the back porch.  Although...I did get a couple detail tasks done on the porch today,  but we'll talk about that in another post.  Today I also decided to spend some time in the nice,  cool workshop doing a minor project that has been in the back of my mind for some time.  Let's get into it.

The Supply

Now, if you've hung around 173 or any amount of time at all, you may remember that, after a project I look for opportunities to use the scrapwood for some other previously unplanned project.

This time the scrapwood supply didn't come from a project, but rather, it came from a purchase! You see, back in 2023 we got a new snow blower and the shipping container that it came in was framed out in some pretty rough cull lumber.

I immediately knew I would be keeping this wood, although at that moment I really had no idea what I'd use it for.  Then a couple months ago it just kind of occurred to me I could make a couple small pallets for the cold cellar... and...today was the day!

Making Pallets

Making the pallets was simplicity itself.  I used my step ladder as a saw horse.  I thought it would be easier than using actual saw horses because these pallets aren't particularly large, so the ladder would be much more convenient.

I used my crosscut saw to cut the pieces to size and affixed them with drywall screws.  Now, before you give me a hard time about that, I have a whole box of drywall screws and I have absolutely no drywall projects on my radar for any time in the near future. So, I might as well put them to use!  Oh, and I made some feet from some old scrap of 2x4... Judy runnin' through the scraps today!

It is better for you to be free of fear lying upon a pallet, than to have a golden couch and a rich table and be full of trouble. - Epicurus

And Just Like That

Yup, and just like that, we have a couple pallets in the cold cellar, just to keep things off the floor.  I don't know...it just seems better that way.

So there it is - a simple little project using up some old scrap wood and making the cold cellar just a smidgen better.  Hey,  thanks for stopping by - see ya' next time!
